An article written by Amy Lee in the International Journal of Humanities addresses both the high point and downfall of Wilde’s career. Lee also tells the audience to closely read the play and take note of the “hidden” meaning of the name Ernest throughout the play. To further prove her point, Lee suggests the 1952 film version of the play explores this “hidden” sexual agenda. “It incorporates many changes our sensibilities have undergone because of psychoanalysis, film language development in the second half of the 20th century, gender theory, the development of communication technology, as well as the popularization of multimedia visual communication methods which have great impact on the way audiences receive and understand a film’s text.” Lee goes on to praise the cast as well as stating the relevance their personal lived had on the characters they played.
