The Importance of Being Artificial: Style as Substance in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is an article written by Tara Maginnis is about aestheticism during the Victorian Era. According to Oscar Wilde fashion in the Victorian Era was, “a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” Wilde was known for his appearance, as extravagant or out there it was. Maginnis points out the fashion of men and women of that time, while making connections with the text; pointing out instances in the play where attire and clothing was mentioned. She says that, “the characters in Earnest inhabit a surreal reflection of the real world of 1890s London society.” Aestheticism is a big part of the overall production of the play.
